Background Noise

A space to put a thought down — and watch it leave.

Nothing arrives on the stream until you type one in yourself, or opt in below. We're not forcing them on you or trying to ambush you with anything.

A note on this exercise

This widget is a quick take on a long-standing cognitive defusion exercise — putting a thought outside yourself and watching it pass, rather than arguing with it or pushing it away. The broader principle has experimental support in clinical settings. It's been used so many times in meditation sessions.

Unfortunately, the specific Leaves on a Stream visualisation, tested as a standalone audio exercise, didn't do jack in a trial — meaning I can't claim that watching a thought drift away will, on its own, change anyone's relationship to intrusive thoughts. So that's why this is small.

If sitting with a thought for twenty-two seconds is calming, sit with it. If it isn't, close the page.
